Abstract

Present ethnobotanical study was carried out during summer 2023 in spatial and temporal areas of Abbaspur district Poonch. The current study was initiated with the aim to evaluate ethnobotanical and socioeconomical importance of gymnosperms. A total of 45 people of both gender (age 45 to 80 years) were interviewed using questionnaire, direct participant observation and demonstration technique method. A comprehensive ethnobotanical profile of the plants which comprises of the botanical names, vernacular (local) names, family, distribution, occurrence, economical benefits and ethno-medicinal uses was made. The inhabitants of the area used the plants for multi-purpose and for a long time being dependent on surrounding plant resources for life subsistence. Pinus roxburghii (Sarg), Pinus wallichiana (A.B.Jacks), Cedrus deodara (Roxb.exLamb,G.Don), Abies pindrow (Royle.Ex,D.Don Royle) are prominent gymnosperms of the study area. Various quantities indices such as family contribution, plant parts and disease categories were used to obtain the suitable information. Among families, the contribution of Pinaceae was the highest (60 %). While in parts used, leaves showed highest use value of 29% and in diseases category, 23 diseases were recognized. Apart from ethnobotanical roles gymnosperms also have various economical utilizations like used in construction, furniture, food source (sago, edible seeds), for decorative purposes (ornamental plants) and essential oils have many benefits. These results revealed, ethnobotanical data of studied gymnosperm species are being employed in different ethno medicines, economical uses and other domestic purposes. The present research provides valuable information on important gymnosperms of Abbaspur District Poonch Azad Kashmir and highlights the multifaceted uses of gymnosperms.
