Abstract

The dams having volume above 6400 Bm3 quantified for exceeding 25000 in numbers in the whole world (White et al., 2000; Caston et al, 2009)[i]. Conservation / storage quantum for the dams is reduced drastically due to unhealthy distribution of silt charge in the flowing water and correspondingly the sediment deposition affects the overall capacity. It is already known that as the new construction / hindrance in form of weir / dams is provided in the flowing gorge, stream or river, the morphological features of the water bodies in motion get disturbs and the velocity of flow suddenly reduced at control points of water bodies which ultimately provides high quantum of sediments or silt to trap in the reservoir and hence the overall conservation and damming is reduced causing reduced capacity of the dam.
 
Many conventional and modern methods were developed to get the storage of the reservoir in a sustainable and long lasting of its life. The study was done to know that how the Atkinson’s used methods are applied on small dams of Punjab to conserve their storage life in a longer run. In practice, flushing techniques are not being applied at the dam sites but the results after this study would recommend the successful flushed dams and give a clear cut recommendations for the future design and operations.
The process of flushing using the low level built in outlets were developed for clearing the storage from sedimentation at large scales. All the dams of 62 in numbers existed in Potohar Plateau of Punjab were studied and the applications were done on 33 number of dams and after clear study and practical achievement through modelling techniques, seven  numbers of reservoirs / dams were found to be successfully flushed in a certain time period. The study was based on Atkinson’s indicators especially the LTCR of the reservoir at site based calculations.
