Municipal and industrial wastes sometimes pollute the canals like BRB (Bambawala Ravi Badian) and Lahore canal which convey irrigation water. Some factories and residential areas are dumping their waste into these canals. For better use of these canals for irrigation, both general and public purpose, the concentration of pollutants and their effect needed were studied. Samples of drain and canal water from 12 locations were collected in February and March 2008, nearby Lahore city limits. The water quality was accessed by studying various parameters like pH, EC, TDS, BOD, COD, SAR, RSC, Cations, Anions and heavy metals like Pb, Zn, Fe. The Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, uv/visible Spectophotometer, COD and BOD Kits were used for analysis. Results showed that at BRB canal and nearby, the water quality is better than Lahore canal. Lahore canal water has much concentration of pollutants due to urban activities. Although water quality of both canals is fit for irrigation purpose but is not suitable for general and public use.
