Abstract

To see the calcification produced in soft tissues of rat by hypervitaminosis D. Fifteen adult rats were used in the experiment and were divided in two groups. Control group had five animals and experimental group had ten animals. Experimental animals were given 10,000 units of Vitamin D per animal per day for a period of eight weeks. At the end of experimental period animals were sacrificed and their kidneys hearts, aortas, stomachs, lungs and livers were examined for evidence of calcification. six out of ten rats receiving vitamin D showed calcification of various organs in different combination. Metastatic calcification in soft tissues was produced by high doses of vitamin D.
