Abstract

This article presents the text of an essay Urdu zaban aur fasanah nigari(Urdu language and short story writing) by Mir Ghulam Bheek Nairang with necessary notes, first published in monthly Makhzan, Lahore 1903 based on an Urdu translation of Zahra, a Turkish novel, by Syed Sajjad Haider Yildrim. Nairang was reckoned to be a writer of high stature. The essay was intended to evaluate the short story translated based on principles of English criticism as Urdu had little critical writings for the emerging genre of short story then. The essay describes the plot of the story and shows some of the areas where the essayist was not convinced with the writer. The article provides a brief life sketch of Nairang in the introduction of the translation, revealing he was politically and socially active in days of his life.
