Abstract

Higher education sector of Pakistan has witnessed a mushroom growthwhich has led to a higher competition particularly during the lastdecade. To qualify for accreditations and funds, a competitiveenvironment has been witnessed not only among universities but alsoamong the departments of the same university which has ultimately ledto heavy workload and performance pressures on the teachers. Becauseof heavy workload coupled with dearth of resources and autonomy,faculty has been found more vulnerable to job stress and it negativelyimpacts on organizational commitment, quit intentions andperformance. Study explores the sources and consequences of stress ina semi-government university of Pakistan. Study results show lack ofresources and autonomy are not significantly related to stress, but joboverload proved to be significantly associated with stress.Organizational commitment and turnover intentions revealed a directsignificant relation with stress however performance show insignificantassociation with stress.
