The markhor is a large Capra species native to Central Asia, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas. It is listed on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened since 2015. The markhor is the national animal of Pakistan, where it is also known as the screw horn or "screw-horned goat", mārkhor in Urdu from Classical Persian.
There is a misconception that Markhor eats snakes. Actually Markhor do not eat snakes. The name Markhor is derived from two Pashto words "Mar" means Snake and "Akhar" means horns. So, Markhor means an animal having horns like a snake.

It is not true that Markhor eats snakes. Nobody have ever seen Markhor eating snake but so many people have seen it eating grass and leaves of plants in its habitat.
