Nearly five years after the outbreak of COVID-19, the world still doesn't have a clear answer:
Where did the virus originate?
Was it a lab leak or natural transmission from animals to humans?
The World Health Organization (WHO) continues its investigation, but due to the lack of critical data, a definitive conclusion remains elusive.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros has emphasized the need to consider all possibilities and urged countries — especially China — to share any data they may have for the benefit of global health and future pandemic prevention.
The virus was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It has since caused over 20 million deaths, cost the world $10 trillion, and disrupted billions of lives.
In 2021, WHO formed SAGO (Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens), comprising 27 independent experts to further investigate the virus’s origins. While the evidence points toward animal-to-human transmission, the lab-leak theory remains scientifically inconclusive due to limited cooperation and transparency from Chinese authorities.
SAGO’s head, Marietjie Venter, stated that no scientific proof exists so far to confirm the virus was engineered or existed outside China before December 2019. Yet, without more data, the true origins of COVID-19 remain unknown.
As Dr. Tedros stated: uncovering the origins of the virus is not just a scientific quest — it’s a moral obligation.
