The two-week-long anti-quota protests in Bangladesh have turned violent after groups linked to the ruling party attacked student protesters in the capital, Dhaka.
The protests began on July 1 after the High Court reinstated the job quota that reserves one-third of civil service posts for children of fighters who participated in the country’s liberation movement in 1971.
Government Imposes Curfew and Deploys Army
In response to escalating student-led protests against government job quotas, the Bangladesh government has decided to impose a curfew nationwide and deploy the army.
Violent Clashes and Casualties
By Thursday, violence had spread to 47 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts, with 27 killed and 1,500 injured. The total death toll reached 105 by Friday night, according to AFP reports. The US Embassy in Dhaka reported more than 40 deaths and hundreds to possibly thousands injured, describing the situation as "extremely volatile."
