US President Joe Biden has put forth a three-part proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, emphasizing that “it’s time for this war to end.” The plan aims to achieve a lasting resolution through a series of stages:
Ceasefire and IDF Withdrawal:
The first phase involves a six-week ceasefire, during which the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would withdraw from populated areas in Gaza.
This initial period would allow for more humanitarian aid to reach the beleaguered territory, with approximately 600 trucks carrying aid into Gaza every single day.
The goal is to create a conducive environment for further negotiations.
Hostage Exchange and Cessation of Hostilities:
In the second phase, hostages (including male soldiers) would be returned.
The ceasefire would then transition into a permanent cessation of hostilities.
Negotiations between phase one and phase two are expected to be challenging.
Reconstruction and Assistance:
The third phase focuses on reconstruction. With US and international assistance, homes, schools, and hospitals in Gaza would be rebuilt.
The plan acknowledges that some Israelis may oppose it, but Biden urges Israel to stand behind the proposal.
Notably, Hamas has been significantly weakened, making a repeat attack unlikely.
While the proposal includes elements from previous rounds of talks, the US’s call for a permanent ceasefire represents a significant concession to encourage Hamas back to the negotiating table2. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, insists that the war will not end until all its goals are achieved, including the return of hostages and the elimination of Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities2.

This moment presents a decisive opportunity for peace, even amidst challenges and differing opinions. Let’s hope for progress toward a lasting resolution in the region.
