In this fourth lecture of our series on Derrida’s reading of Deleuze, we examine one of the most poetic and politically charged chapters in A Thousand Plateaus—"1914: One or Several Wolves." Derrida explores how Deleuze and Guattari radically reinterpret Freud’s famous case of the Wolf-Man, not merely as a clinical tale, but as a site of philosophical resistance. This session focuses on how psychoanalysis, especially in its Oedipal form, commits an ethical violence by forcing singular identities and reducing multiplicities to fixed names—particularly the “proper name” as a mechanism of control.

We delve into the concept of "bêtise" (stupidity) not as mere ignorance, but as a systematic stultification enacted by institutions like psychoanalysis. Drawing on Artaud’s visceral critique of being dispossessed of his own name, Derrida reads Deleuze’s sarcasm as a counterattack—where the Wolf-Man becomes a symbol of infinite becoming, a multiplicity of intensities that defies domestication.

This lecture also touches on themes of the rhizome, deterritorialization, the becoming-animal, and the critique of Freudian authority. It’s a powerful interrogation of how language, names, and diagnoses shape subjectivity, often violently so.
