Derrida reflects on how psychoanalysts like Freud, Jung, and even Lacan misunderstood or deliberately ignored the transformative potential of affect, machinic assemblages, and the non-representational nature of becoming.

Deleuze’s claim that psychoanalysis “massacres” the becoming-animal is explored in detail, as is the idea that affect, not symbol, drives human experience. The lecture also delves into Deleuze’s rejection of depth psychology in favor of flat ontologies—planes, assemblages, and machines that configure desire, pain, masochism, and transformation. Derrida problematizes the refusal to "understand what one understands," calling it not mere ignorance but a symptomatic, violent act—a philosophical mistreatment of becoming.
