The standard potential, E°, for a redox reaction is related to the standard change in free energy, ΔG°, for the reaction by the equation ΔG° = -nFE°. When E° is positive, ΔG° is negative, and the reaction is thermodynamically favored. When E° is negative, ΔG° is positive, and the reaction is thermodynamically unfavored. It is also possible to relate E° to the equilibrium constant, K, for the reaction through the relationship between ΔG° and K (ΔG° = -RTlnK).
