Description

Liver cirrhosis is one of the common liver diseases in our country. It’s caused by many viral and non viral etiology. Common viral etiology includes chronic hepatitis B, C and D. Common non viral etiology includes autoimmune liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, Wilson disease, hemochromotosis, etc. Liver cirrhosis is a lifelong disease and has known set of complications like hepatic encephalopathy, Variceal bleeding, ascites, hepatorenal syndrome, liver cancer and others. Therefore, liver cirrhotic patients need to be monitored for these complications and different international measures must be adopted to prevent development of these complications.
Development of varices and then bleeding from these varices is a fatal complications. Treatment strategy includes primary and secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding and treatment of acute variceal bleeding.
