Liver cirrhosis is one of the common liver diseases in our country. It’s caused by many viral and non viral etiology. Common viral etiology includes chronic hepatitis B, C and D. Common non viral etiology includes autoimmune liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, Wilson disease, hemochromotosis, etc. Liver cirrhosis is a lifelong disease and has known set of complications like hepatic encephalopathy, Variceal bleeding, ascites, hepatorenal syndrome, liver cancer and others. Therefore, liver cirrhotic patients need to be monitored for these complications and different international measures must be adopted to prevent development of these complications.
Ascites is one of the common complications of liver cirrhosis. Ascites may be mild, moderate or marked in volume. It may be simple ascites or infected ascites called spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Ascites may become refractory to treatment. It is treated with diuretics and when refractory then therapeutic or palliative paracentesis is required.
