The Prophet ﷺ said, People! Repent before Allah Almighty, I repent before Allah Almighty a hundred times a day (so you should repent a thousand times every hour) (Muslim) Mishkaat al-Masabih 2356
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) says that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, "By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah more than seventy times a day and repent." (Bukhari)
Explanation:
The Prophet ﷺ did not ask for forgiveness and repentance so often because, may God bless him and grant him peace, he was suffering from sin because he was innocent, but the reason for this was that the Prophet ﷺ held the highest position of obedience. On their own, they thought that maybe I had committed some fault in the service and worship of Allah and I could not do the service that is worthy of the glory of the Lord. Also, the purpose of this was to encourage the Ummah to ask for forgiveness and repentance, that even though the Prophet ﷺ was innocent and a good creature, when he ﷺ repented and asked for forgiveness seventy times a day, sinners should ask for forgiveness and repentance very often. Hazrat Ali, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say that there were only two shelters of peace on earth from divine punishment, one has risen and the other remains, so take this second shelter, the shelter that rose is the person of the Holy Prophet. It was dear and what remains is Istighfar, the guidance of Allah. The verse (Wama kan Allah liazbhum vant faihum wa kaan Allah muazbhum wahm yistaghafrun). And Allah is not going to punish them as long as you (PBUH) are among them, and Allah is not going to punish them in this state as long as they seek forgiveness.
