The first hydel power station (Karot) project under (CPEC) china Pakistan economic corridor has been completed successfully. The Karot hydropower station project has a total installed capacity of 720 megawatts (MW), with the total investment of more than 1.7 billion US dollars. It is being developed by Karot Power Company Limited (KPCL), a special purpose-vehicle in which China Three Gorges South Asia Company Investment (CSAIL) holds a majority share.

Project information:
Karot Power station is one of the priority projects of “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” c-pack. It is also the first hydel project that was included in CPEC. Once functional, it will provide Pakistan with more than 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy every year, and it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.5 million tons per year. While optimizing the energy structure and contributing to the global goal of “Carbon neutrality, it will promote Pakistan’s cheap energy construction, social development and Economy.
Introduction:
The China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a 3,000-kilometer belt and road long route of infrastructure projects connecting northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Gwadar Port in Pakistan's western Balochistan province.
The first hydropower project along this corridor, the Karot hydropower station, closed the gates of its diversion tunnels after six years of construction and started water storage in its reservoir for future use. The Karot Hydropower Project in Pakistan is one of the major investments under the Belt and Road Initiative. It will start generating electricity in April 2022.
Location:
The dam is located near the villages of Karot, in Punjab, and Hollar, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), which is roughly 55km south-east of Islamabad. The dam is expected to be 95.5m-high and 460m-wide across the Jhelum River.
