Alipur Ka Ailee is Mumtaz Mufti's semi-autobiographical novel describing the trials and tribulations of the early phase of its protagonist's life. The story continues in Alakh Nagri, which makes up the second part of the long novel.


ممتاز مفتی اردو ادب کا ایک معتبر نام ہے ۔ انہوں نے اردو ادب کو نہ صرف موضوعات کی سطح پر نئے امکانات سے روشنا س کیا بلکہ اپنی فکرو نظرکی گہرائی اور تخیل کی بلند پرواز ی سے اردو ادب کی مختلف اصناف کو بھی ایک نئی معنویت سے آشنا کیا۔ ممتاز مفتی نے بے شمار افسانے اورخاکے لکھے لیکن ان کی شناخت اردو دنیا میں اس ناول کی وجہ سے قائم ہوئی ۔ اس ناول کا مکمل تعارف ڈاکٹر سہیل بخاری کے لفظوں میں کچھ اس طر ح ہے، ’’اگر آپ نے ’’علی پور کا ایلی‘‘ نہیں پڑھا تو سمجھ لیجیے آپ نے کچھ نہیں پڑھا ۔ آپ اسے پڑھنا شروع کریں گے تو محسوس کریں گے کہ آپ بہت کچھ سیکھ رہے ہیں،پڑھ چکیں گے تو آپ پھر سے پڑھنا شروع کردیں گے ،اس لیے کہ یہ گونا گوں دلچسپیوں کا مجموعہ ہے گویا اس کا مطالعہ تسکین کا باعث ہے۔ اس ناول میں جنسی پہلو بہت ابھرا ہوا ہے ، اس کا ہر کردار جنس کے کسی نہ کسی ایک رخ کو ہمارے سامنے پیش کر تا ہے ۔ لیکن اس میں نہ عریانی ہے نہ فحاشی نہ لذتیت ، الغرض ’’علی پور کا ایلی‘‘ اپنی گونا گوں خوبیوں کے باعث اردو کے اچھے ناولوں میں شمارکیے جانے کامستحق ہے۔‘‘ اور اب یہ اردو کی اہم ناولوں میں شمار بھی ہوچکا ہے۔ اس ناول کے بارے میں یہ بھی کہا جاتا ہے کہ یہ اردو ناول کا گرنتھ صاحب ہے۔ اور اس ناول کو آدم جی ایوارڈ سے نوازا گیا۔

One of the celebrated fiction writers, Mumtaz Mufti made several experiments in technique of storytelling with reference to the issues he chose to highlight before his readers. He developed a keen eye for the psychological studies of his characters. He also wrote a voluminous novel entitled Alipur Ka Aili which was later recognized as one the best known novels in the Urdu language.

Mumtaz Mufti was born on 11 September, 1905 at Batala in Gurdaspur, Punjab. He received his early education at Amritsar, Miyanwali, and Dera Ghazi. Later, he got his degrees of B. A. from Islamia College, Lahore in 1929 and S. A. V from Central College, Lahore in 1933. He worked for All India Radio and also for Bombay film industry. He migrated to Pakistan in 1947 where he worked on important positions for the Government of Pakistan. He passed away on 27 October, 1995.
Mumtaz Mufti published his short stories in Ankahi, Gehma Gehmi, Chup, Gudia Ghar, and Raughani Putle. He published his light essays in Kaise Kaise Log and put together his sketches in Pyaz ke Chchilke. He also wrote his Hajj travelogue called Labbaik which received remarkable applause from his readers.
