IHC seeks reply from Punjab govt on Nawaz’s plea seeking sentence suspension on medical grounds

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday sought a reply from the Punjab Home Department on deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s plea seeking suspension of his sentence in Al-Aziza reference on medical grounds.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar resumed hearing of the plea. The court sought a record of Nawaz Sharif’s medical treatment along with the reply from the provincial home department.

The hearing was then adjourned till February 12.

The plea was filed by the ex-premier’s counsel, Khawaja Harris, in the IHC. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), accountability court and superintendent of Kot Lakhpat jail have been made respondents.

In the plea, the former premier requested that the accountability court verdict sentencing him be suspended until a decision is announced on his appeal against the jail term. The sentence in Al-Azizia reference should be suspended and he should be granted bail on medical grounds against surety bond, the petition read.
