Seven Trapped In Kohistan Mountains Due To Snowfall Rescued
MANSEHRA: Seven people who had gone missing in the Upper Kohistan mountains after heavy snowfall in the region were rescued on Sunday, local officials said.
A search and rescue operation was launched earlier today for the seven labourers, who had gone in search of precious peridot gemstones in Spat Malli area in Upper Kohistan but lost contact with their families after heavy snowfall covered the region and blocked routes leading to the mountains.
Deputy Commissioner Upper Kohistan Hamid ur Rehman said all seven people were located and rescued in the search operation.
District police officer Raja Abdul Saboor Khan had earlier told media that the families of the treasure hunters had not heard from them for more than a week, sparking fears that they may be trapped or dying.
The provincial government had been requested to provide a helicopter to launch a rescue operation for the missing.
Pakistan Army personnel would also take part in the search and rescue mission, the official had added.
Last week an operation was also launched to rescue tourists stranded in heavy snow near Nathia Gali. Pakistan Army and Air Force rescue teams were sent in support of the civil administration to help the tourists trapped at Toheed Abad near Nathia Gali.
