#Students in #Manchester have called for a planned 9ft statue of #MahatmaGandhi to be scrapped because they claim he’s an ‘anti-black #racist’. #Gandhi is revered worldwide for leading a peaceful campaign to end the rule of the #BritishEmpire in his homeland. The Indian lawyer was assassinated aged 78 in 1948 a year after his country gained independence. He was nominated for the Nobel peace prize five times. Gandhi has, however, been criticized for his comments about African natives during the early 20th century Boer war between the British Empire troops and two states in what is now South Africa. In response to the Manchester Arena bombing which killed 22 people in May 2017, an Indian spiritual mission called Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur has donated the Gandhi statue to the city.
