Nepal's Prime Minister elected on social media -How Nepalβs Gen Z used gaming app Discord to pick PM
Nepal has elected its first female PM via discord. Former Supreme Court chief justice Sushila Karki has become the countryβs interim prime minister after Gen Z led anti-corruption protests overthrew the government.
Karki has a reputation as a fearless and incorruptible jurist which has appealed to many young people in the country of 30 million. She was part of the 1990 revolution that ended the monarchy in Nepal.
While many have painted the protests as a response to Nepals βsocial media ban,β this has been part of a much larger Gen Z led movement in Nepal fighting against political corruption and wealth inequalities, demanding accountability and change. The revolt was sparked when the government attempted to seize control of 26 social media and messaging apps to silence this growing anti-corruption outcry. Gen Z protestors took to the streets, burning down the palace of legislation, forcing the prime minister to resign, and overthrowing the government within 48-hours.
This is one of the most historic youth-led movements, proving that change is possible through organized resistance. A revolution by Gen Z for the next generations to come.
