  • Abstract: ABSTRACT Nazzarat al-Ma‘arif al-Qur’aniyyah was an educational institute that was established in Delhi on June 13, 1913 with an aim to promulgate Shah Wali Allah’s Qur’anic thought. Maulana Ma╒mud ╓asan, Shaikh al-Hind, founded the institute and appointed Maulana ‘Ubaid Allah Sindhi as its Director General. Drawing inspiration from Shah Wali Allah’s principles of tafsir, Maulana Sindhi elaborated basic principles for the study of the Qur’an in accordance with the needs of the modern era. His understanding of the Qur’an is discernable in four tafasir, which are basically compilations of notes taken by his students during his lectures. These are: Ilham al-Ra╒man in Arabic language, Ilqa’ al-Mannan in Sindhi language, and al-Maqam al-Ma╒mud and Qur’ani Shu‘ur-i Inqilab in Urdu language. This article introduces in detail the contribution of Maulana Sindhi to Qur’anic Studies.

  • Abstract:  Exegetical improvement (istidrak) is an important dimension in the tafsiri literature. Istidrak, in this context, is a process in which an interpreter of the Qur’an attempts to rectify, emend, or supplement the opinion of another interpreter if the former disagrees with the latter on some exegetical viewpoint. This article studies the exegetical improvements (istidrakat) of Shihab al-Din Ma╒mud al-Alusi in Ru╒ al-Ma‘ani and Ghulam Rasul Sa‘idi in Tibyan al-Qur’an on Fakhr al-Din al-Razi’s al-Tafsir al-Kabir. The article demonstrates with examples that, in their exegeses of the Qur’an, Shihab al-Din al-Alusi and Ghulam Rasul Sa‘idi disagreed, at various places, with Fakhr al-Din al-Razi on his exegetical viewpoints.

  • Abstract:  Hadith is the record of the life of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him). The scholars of hadiths took great pains to preserve his sayings and report his actions. Sunan of Abu Dawud is considered one of the six most authentic books of hadiths. Imam Abu Dawud devoted most of his life to the compilation of this book. He formulated rules for acquisition and dissemination of hadith, a process known as al-akhdh wa ’l-tahdith in the field of hadith sciences.  These rules are found in an epistle−later known as Risalah ila Ahl Makkah fi Wa╖f Sunanih−that he had written to the people of Makkah. While taking into account the rules Imam Abu Dawud formulated for acquisition and dissemination of hadith, the present paper discusses various aspects of the methodology that he adopted and applied while compiling the Sunan.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT Sirah is considered one of the most important branches of Islamic studies. The literature on the subject is rapidly expanding in various languages including English, Urdu, Arabic, Turkish, Bangla etc. After evolution of almost fourteen hundred years, sirah-writing has reached its zenith in modern times in terms of quantity and diversity of topics covered under the genre. Universities in Pakistan tremendously contribute to teaching and research on the sirah. They hold specialised lectures, discussions, and conferences on the sirah; publish books and journals in this field, and establish many specialised libraries of sirah studies. Besides journals dedicated to sirah studies, a large number of articles appear in the journals relating to the field of Islamic studies. At a conservative estimate, more than one hundred theses were produced in last two decades at M. A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. levels in sirah studies. In this situation, it becomes inevitable not only to reflect upon the quality of the work produced in the field of the sirah, but also point out the dimensions, which need further attention of the scholars. Against this backdrop, this article attempts to highlight the challenges confronting sirah-writing in modern times.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT In contemporary world, child marriage is discouraged and has been considered a social and legal issue. Islamic law, while allowing child marriage, puts certain restrictions on the guardian’s authority to contract his ward into marriage. Pakistani law follows the suit. Pakistan law, aiming at discouraging child marriage, has declared it a punishable offence, though the marriage itself remains valid. Islamic, as well as Pakistani law gives the right to exercise the option of puberty to a person whose marriage was contracted during minority. The right to exercise option of puberty is a safeguard against abuse of authority of a guardian. This right is though available to persons whose marriage was contracted during minority regardless of gender, it is more crucial for a girl than a boy, as the latter has the authority of divorce whereas the former has only this option to repudiate a marriage contracted by her guardian. The dilemma is that in Pakistani social environment practically it is difficult for a girl to exercise this right without consent of her family. This article attempts to explore the rules regarding child marriage and option of puberty in Islamic as well as Pakistani law and analyse the problems in implementation of this right in Pakistan.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT Custom (‘urf) is the secondary source of Islamic law. Classical Muslim jurists especially, the ╓anafis, have discussed the status of custom as a source of Islamic law. They pointed out in their writings numerous shari‘ah rulings, which were based on customs and usages of the people. This paper seeks to analyse the impact of custom, as a source of Islamic law, on modern financial transactions. It is divided into two sections. The first section consists of introductory information about custom i.e., its meaning, kinds, conditions, and validity. The second section deals with the impact of custom (‘urf) on modern financial transactions, namely the transactions related to sale, lease, agency and intellectual property.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT  “We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts, have their root in Greece” states Percy Bysshe Shelley in one of his poems. From philosophy to various practical sciences, the world definitely much owes to the Greeks. This is especially true for Western civilization, as the contributions of the Greeks to the fields of philosophy, science, literature, art, architechture, politics, etc., arguably form the cornerstone on which it was built. In fact, Greece is often called “the cradle of Western civilisation.” Along with their contributions to politics, ethics, metaphysics, literature, etc., Greek philosophers played an important role in the development of economic thought in human history. This article endeavors to collect the economic teachings scattered in the works of various Greek philosophers and puts them in one place.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT Lewis R. Rambo is an American scholar who has gained prominence for his numerous works on religious conversion. For critics, he analysed the data written in the last three centuries on this topic and conducted interviews of various converts to formulate an objective stage model of religious conversion. He divides his model into seven stages that include context, crisis, quest, encounter, interaction, commitment, and consequences. He argues that empirically there is no fundamental difference in the conversion in Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. In the contemporary world, his model is largely used to better understand the process of religious change of an individual or a group. The current study analyses the works of Rambo and argues that although some of the stages of his model seem to be influenced by Christianity, the flexibility of his model allows its application to conversion to Islam as well. Furthermore, it is also argued that to better understand advocate-convert relationship, it is necessary to analyse the stages of encounter and interaction in the light of Islamic rules of da‘wah that seem absent from the model of Rambo.

  • Abstract:  Islam conquered the nations by its universal message throughout the history. The preaching force of Islam has always been the main reason of its global spread. However, the literature explaining the methodology of da‘wah that originated in the twentieth-century subcontinent is unprecedented in its nature. This literature was produced against the backdrop of Islamic revivalist thought that presented Islam as a complete code of life. Maulana Amin A╒san Islahi’s book Da‘vat-i Din aur us ka Tariq-i Kar is a fundamental work on this topic. This book is first of its kind on the topic of da‘wah-methodology in Islamic literary history. The book addresses the methodology of da‘wah and explains its different aspects in light of the Qur’an, sayings of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and the biographies of the Prophets. This paper explains the Islamic revivalist background of the twentieth century that brought about da‘wah-methodology literature developed by I╖la╒i and examines different aspects of his work.

  • Abstract: ABSTRACT Scholars working in the field of social sciences in American academic institutions seriously study Islam and Muslims—i.e., Islamic fundamental sources, Islamic theology and philosophy, Islamic history and civilisation, etc. However, their methodological approaches and objectives may vary from those of the scholars working in the academic institutions of the Muslim world. For example, memorisation of the Qur’an and learning of different forms of worship i.e., prayers, pilgrimage, etc.—some of the essentials of the Islamic education—have never been a concern of the Western institutions. Instead, their focus has been on living realities of Muslim societies and socio-political dimensions of Islamic world. The author of the paper has twice been on fellowship programmes in American universities during which he had the opportunity to have direct academic interaction with many eminent American professors and scholars of Islamic sciences. This enabled him to observe their methodological approaches to both teaching and research in the area of Islamic studies. While taking into account the related published works, this paper is primarily based on his personal experiences and observations drawn from various visits to American academic institutions.
