Abstract

“God the Failed Hypothesis” is New York Times 2007 best seller book in which Victor John Stenger asserts that Science has shown that God does not exist. Prior to this, in history of religions, God was the mandate of Philosophy and religion. Contrary to that, New Atheists (Such as Victor, J Stenger and Richard Dawkins) assert that the very existence of God must be subjected to scientific method, hence God hypothesis is a valid Hypothesis, i ,e,. by using Scientific Method, it seems that the God Hypothesis is testable, refutable and falsifiable. The main tenant described by Stenger is that, if God exists, some evidence for his existence should be detectable by scientific means. He attempted to analyze scientifically the theological claims made for the existence of God and ultimately concludes that the origin of Universe and life can be understood by completely ignoring concept of intervening God. Moreover, he asserts that an observable God should be detectable and supernatural cannot be excluded from scientific inquiry realm. He denies miraculous origin of universe from nothing and argues that transition from nothing to something is plausible. The purpose of this critical review examines above mentioned views. Using content analysis of selected work in the book “God: The Failed Hypothesis”, main views of Victor J Stenger about God and use of Scientific Method are commented in the light of Islamic Thought.

Research Objective

To critically analyze the "God hypothesis" from an Islamic perspective, examining scientific arguments and data that may bear on the existence of God.

Methodology

The paper critically analyzes scientific models and empirical data relevant to the existence of God. It draws upon philosophical arguments, scientific theories, and Islamic theological perspectives.

Discussion

The authors discuss the limitations of scientific inquiry in proving or disproving the existence of God, particularly in relation to methodological naturalism. They highlight that scientific arguments against God's existence are often based on the absence of evidence and the presence of phenomena that appear to contradict divine attributes. The paper also touches upon the concept of "intelligent design" and its critiques.

Key Findings

The paper suggests that if God exists, God must be found within the gaps or errors of scientific models. It argues that the lack of evidence for God's existence leads to the conclusion that God likely does not exist. The paper also explores arguments against the existence of God, including the problem of evil and the incompatibility of a personal being with a non-physical nature.

Conclusion

The paper concludes that the "God hypothesis" is a failed hypothesis when examined through the lens of scientific evidence and reasoning. It implies that scientific progress in filling knowledge gaps diminishes the need for a divine explanation.

Fact Check

* The paper is published in the AL-MANHAL Research Journal, Vol. 02, Issue 02 (July-December) 2022.
* The paper cites V.J. Stenger's book "God: The Failed Hypothesis" multiple times, indicating it is a primary source for the arguments presented.
* The paper references various Quranic verses, suggesting an engagement with Islamic scripture as part of the analysis.
