Abstract

The Central Research Division of Pfizer at Sandwich, UK, has received the 1991 Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement for the development of DIFLUCAN (fluconazole). DIFLUCAN was discovered by Pfizer scientists in 1982 after an intensive research programme to discover an effective anti-fungal agent which was well tolerated and could be administered orally and intravenously. It is the first of a new class of agents - the triazoles - and is widely used in the treatment and prevention of often life threatening fungal infections in AIDS patients as well as those receiving cancer chemotherapy or undergoing organ transplants. Also, DIFLUCAN is the only orally administered single dose treatment for vaginal candidiasis. Pfizer Central Research, Sandwich, previously received the Queen’s Award in 1979 for the discovery of MANSIL (oxaminiquine), an important development in the treatment of schistosomiasis, a major tropical disease.
