Abstract
Early or delayed surgery in acute cholecystitis remains a controversial issue. In. a retrospective study 46 patients with early cholecystectomy were compared with 54 having delayed surgery in respect of diffic’ulty of operation, incidence of complications, frequency of diagnostic errors and time spent in hospital. Age and Sex distribution and operative procedures were similar in the two groups. No significant differences were observed in post-operative morbidity and mortality rates, technical difficulty of cholecystectomy and diagnostic error rates in two groups. However, greater expertise is required to do cholecystectomy in acute cases. The most striking difference between the two groups was the time spent in hospital. The total hospital stay was 8.5 days more in the delayed, as compared with the early group. of choice provided the surgeon is familiar with theEarly cholecystéctomy is suggested as the treatment operation in acute cases.(JPMA 34 : 210, 1984).
