The General Body meeting of Pakistan Medical Association Multan Branch, was held at Railway Hospital Multan on April 24 under the Presidentship of Dr. K.M. Afzal Malizai.
The meeting discussed the various problems of the medical profession and elected new office bearers for the year 1981-82. The following office bearers were elected:
1. President Prof. Dr. Shabbir Ahmad Narro.
2. General Secretary Dr. Muhammad Akbar.
3. Vice President Dr. Badar Qureshi.
4. Joint Secretary Dr. Surya Mohyud-Din.
5. Clinical Secretary Prof. Dr. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta.
6. Finance Secretary Dr. Mohyud-Din.
7. Press Secretary Dr. Amir Riazud-Din.
It was further decided unanimously that:-
1. There should be a proper share (quota) of the residential plots in any new housing scheme anywhere in Pakistan for the medical profession like journalist, lawyer, etc.
2. All the doctors should have the word of M.D. (Medical Doctor) on number plates of their cars, scooters and motor cycles and they should have all the facilities of parking anywhere and crossing all the light signals at any time as being practised in all the developed countries.
3. Doctors should be allowed to have a medical protection society to defend all the legal cases for doctor if there will be any.
4. It was also decided to have a separate build-ing for P.M.A. Multan and for that thedistrict authorities will be approached for thedonation of suitable plot at a suitable place.
NEW PMA BODY IN D.I. KHAN
A meeting of the PMA Dera Ismail Khan Branch was held on March 27 under the presidentship of Dr. Fazlurrehman Khan and the following were unanimously elected as office bearers:-
1. President - Dr. Fazlurrehman Khan, MBBS Abre-Karam, D.O. Khan, Cantt. NWFP.
2. Senior Vice President-Dr. Sajjad Syed, MBBS Ghas Mandi, D.I. Khan City, NWFP.
3. Vice President-Dr. Ghulam Qasim Khak-wani, MBBS. Muslim Bazar, D.I. Khan City, NWFP.
4. Gen. Secretary-Dr. M. Anwar Kamran, MBBS, md Powindah Bazar, D.I. Khan, City, NWFP.
5. Treasurer - Dr. Amanullah Khan, MBBS Muslim Bazar, D.I. Khan City, NWFP.
6. Provincial Counciller - Dr. Bashir Ahmed Shah, MBBS.
PUNJAB COUNCILLORS MEET
Prior to the meeting of the Central Council of PMA on May 8, the central councillors of P.M.A. Punjab held a meeting the same day with Prof. Kh. Sadiq Hussain, President, Provincial Branch in the Chair.
The meeting took some important organizational decisions which were later conveyed to the central council.
The decisions were aimed at making PMA a more organised body. In one of the decisions a plea was made that the Central Council must meet after every four months as provided in the constitution. Before meetng the PMA Centre must ask the provincial branches to communicate an item, if any, to be included in the agenda.
The meeting was attended by 18 central councillors.
CONSIDERING HELP
UNESCO is considering Pakistan\'s request for assistance in preventive educational programme to check increasing drug abuse in the country, according to UNESCO consultant Miss Montandon.
Miss Montandon, who came here to follow up the recent visit of the UNESCO drug control section chief, Miss Nicole Fredrick, held discussions in this regard with officials in different departments including the Chairman of the Pakistan Narcotics Control Board, Mr. Miraj Hussain.
After the Buner (Swat) crop subsitution project the preventive education programme will be the major U.N. contribution to help curtail the production and abuse of narcotics.
At the time of total prohibition, announced President Ziaul Haq in 1979, there were about 450,000 recognised addicts listed with the opium vends now closed and since then several thousands of them are supposed to have been treated in different treatment centres.
Nevertheless, drug abuse is on the rise in Pakistan as in the rest of the world.
She said in Pakistan there is more abuse of chemical drugs specially the stimulants but she did not like to name these chemicals.
According to unconfirmed reports, about 60 tons of opium out of the total annual production, which is placed at 120 tons by the PNCB and thrice more by the international agencies, not less than 60 tons are consumed by the local addicts.
DR. JOGEZAI INAUGURATES ADVANCED COURSE IN MEDICINE
A medical conference at National level will shortly be convened at Quetta to discuss the way and means to improve the health delivery system in the country.
This was disclosed by the Dr. Naseeruddin Jogezai in his inaugural address at the three week \'.Advanced Course in Medicine" organised by J.P.M.C. on May 2.
Fourteen postgraduate students and general practitioners are participated in this course which was held in the premises of J.P.M.C. College of Nursing. The course included clinical demonstrations and lectures on a wide range of subjects such as, coagulation disorders, heart ailment, mental illness, kidney diseases, meningitis and leukaemia.
The Health Minister said that the conference besides discussing other matters pertaining to the medical profession would lay special emphasis on the furestion of how to provide better medical facilities to the majority of our population living in the rural areas. Such conferences would be held regularly, every year and senior doctors and professors of medical colleges would be invited to give their expert opinions and suggestion, he added.
Underlining the importance of such courses, Dr. Jogezai said that these courses would help the participants to keep abreast with the latest knowledge in the field of medicine. He also stressed the need for conducting more courses on other subjects as well.
The Health Minister expressed his regert that J.P.M.C. does not have its own auditorium and has to borrow the nursing hall to conduct the course. He announced that sanction would be granted in the near further for the construction of an auditorium.
He said that JPMC was an important national institution and he would try his utmost to make it an ideal institution.
Earlier Dr. B.A. Qureshi, Director, JPMC in his address of welcome thanked the Minister for taking the trouble to come to Karachi to inaugurate the course.
ANNUAL SCIENTIC MEETING OF SOCIETY OF OBSTERICIANS AND GYNAECOLOGISTS
The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan will be held in Karachi, at the Hotel Holiday Inn from 20th-22nd October, 1981.
