The rate of change of digital imaging technology is unbelievable. This is obvious by the fact that by the time you will be reading this article, you may already be a generation behind. The future of record and documentation storage in dentistry lies in digital imaging systems. I have experienced great pain in converting thousands of my 35mm slides to digital photographic records. Easy access to computers and multimedia projectors has almost eliminated the need of slide projectors. Above all it is economical on pocket and space to maintain digital records of the patients. The decreasing cost of the computers and digital cameras has further made [the] digital record keeping in the dental office a practical reality. The current article is an effort to clarify some of the technical aspects of digital imaging for use in dentistry.
