Linguistic Research in UrduWhile linguistic research has a long history in Pakistan, the confusion regarding what is linguistic and what is extra-linguistic has prevailed much of contemporary debate on Urdu linguistics. Writers like Tariq Rahman, Elena Bashir, Rauf Parekh are aware of this confusion, and have boldly articulated their concerns about the backwardness of linguistics in Pakistan in general and in Urdu in particular. On the basis of the data extracted from the HEC recognized Urdu journals, this paper argues that there is a scarcity of linguistic work in Urdu and most of the available work is either what has been called extra-linguistic or related to such branches of linguistics that are not its core areas. This paper also explores the reason of backwardness of linguistics in Pakistan, and offers some recommendations to promote it here
