The Principle of Movement in the Structure of Islam
Nicholas brought Ijtihad's into Iqbal's keen consideration that he wrote a comprehensive essay which was read in the conference in Habibiya Hall Lahore and subsequently published as a sixth lecture in RECONSTRUCTION OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT IN ISLAM. Ijtihad advocate movement which is the driving force of Islamic ideology hence it was titled as The Principle of Movement in the Structure of Islam which was later translated in Urdu by Nazir Niazi. In this essay Iqbal treated especially the early doctors of Ijtihad as Ibn-e- Taimyyah, Ibn-e- Rushd and Ghazali and initiated his thought provoking discussion on the difference of opinion on Ijtihad at early Abbasid's time by Ash'arites and Mu'tazila and then to the ascetic Sufism. He stressed upon the spirit of Ijtihad as a dire need for the muslims of modern times in the light of the philosophy of western writers. In this essay the writer through Iqbal's letters tried to expound his concept of Ijtihad.
