Abstract

Muhammad Hasan Askari and Structuralism
Renowned short story writer, critic and scholar Muhammad Hasan Askari was one of the most respected names among modern Urdu writers and theorists. He was an important voice within the modernist movement. In his early years He translated many fictional and other literary works into Urdu, especially from English, French, and Russian. By 1960 Askari became increasingly engaged in the transition to philosophical, religious and metaphysical issues, but in fact he was playing a leading role in the development of postcolonial discourse from the very beginning of his carrier.
In this article a humble attempt is made to show that Askari was not only the first to introduce structuralism and other related debates in Urdu in late 70s but is, hitherto, also the last who scrutinized and criticized its deepest traits from traditional and metaphysical standpoint.
