In this study, anticonvulsant effects of aqueous extract of G. glabra were investigated in mice. G. glabra extract, diazepam and normal saline were injected intraperitoneally at 50-300 mg kg-1, 0.5-1 mg kg-1 and 10 mL kg-1, respectively, 30 min before pentylenetetrazole (90 mg kg-1, i.p.). Aqueous extract at a dose of 300 mg kg-1 delayed the onset time of the seizure and decreased the duration of seizure significantly compared to the control. The duration of seizure was also significantly decreased at doses 60-200 mg kg-1. In conclusion, the aqueous extract of glycyrrhiza root possesses anticonvulsant activities which may be effective in the management of petit mal seizure.
