Abstract

This research examines the signification of the singularity of narrators (ifrād) for twenty-two Ḥadīth narrators mentioned in al-Jarḥ wa ’l-Ta‘dīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim. Before Ibn Abī Ḥātim, Muḥammad b. Ismā‘īl al-Bukhārī also used a word or text that signifies only one grade of disapproval or approval for the same narrators and combined them in one chapter. One should not claim that the strangeness of their names is the only reason for this. By looking at the biographies of these narrators, it becomes clear that there are also reasons that relate to the narrator in terms of ignorance. Moreover, some aspects do not relate to the narrations but relate to the characteristics of the narrators, such as the uniqueness of the nickname like Abū Hind al-Dārī. In this article, an attempt has been made to find out the reasons for using a word or text that signifies the ifrād of specific narrators mentioned in al-Jarḥ wa ’l-Ta‘dīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim.

Research Objective

To examine the reasons for the use of words or texts signifying tafarrud (singularity of narrators) for specific narrators mentioned in Chapter B' of Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Jar wa al-Ta`dl.

Methodology

Analysis of Chapter B' of Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Jar wa al-Ta`dl, focusing on the biographies and narrations of twenty-two hadith narrators. Comparison with the practices of earlier scholars like Muhammad b. Ism`il al-Bukhr.

Discussion

The article highlights the importance of tafarrud in hadith science and the meticulous efforts of scholars like Ibn Abi Hatim in preserving and verifying prophetic traditions. It argues that the reasons for classifying narrators with tafarrud are multifaceted, encompassing aspects of the narrator's character, knowledge, and the uniqueness of their reports, rather than solely relying on superficial criteria.

Key Findings

The study identified three categories of narrators in Chapter B' of al-Jar wa al-Ta`dl:
1. Four Companions whose hadith are not in al-Bukhr or Muslim but are found in other Sunan books.
2. Seven trustworthy narrators who exhibit tafarrud and whose hadith are narrated by al-Bukhr and Muslim.
3. Eleven narrators who have tafarrud in their reports but are considered weak or unknown.
Reasons for tafarrud extend beyond the strangeness of names to include ignorance, unique nicknames, and characteristics of the narrators.

Conclusion

The study concludes that the signification of tafarrud in hadith narration is a complex issue with various underlying reasons related to the individual narrators. Ibn Abi Hatim's work provides valuable insights into these reasons, contributing to the understanding of hadith authenticity and the biographies of narrators.
