The human being is composed of soul and body, both requiring care. Islamic teachings emphasize harmony between religious demands and worldly life, necessitating attention to both physical and spiritual well-being. Faith requires both outward and inward dimensions, manifested in words and actions. Ahl al-Sunnah wa 'l-Jam`ah adopt this holistic view. Ism`ls, however, differentiate between the apparent (law, Messenger) and the inner (actuality, Imam), suggesting a complementary knowledge conveyed by `Ali. This view is challenged by the text, which maintains that the Prophet alone was the sole conduit of divine guidance.
Ahl al-Sunnah wa 'l-Jam`ah believe that inward and outward meanings are interrelated and must be interpreted in accordance with the Qur'an and Sunnah to be valid. Ism`ls interpret each term independently, positing an external dimension perceived by senses and an internal dimension perceived through knowledge, with the former attributed to the Messenger of Allah and the latter to the Imam. The text asserts that the Qur'an and Sunnah do not support the Ism`li belief, as the Prophet Muhammad alone conveyed divine guidance for both outward and inward purification.
The disagreement between Ahl al-Sunnah wa 'l-Jam`ah and Ism`ls on the interpretation of inward and outward meanings has implications for Muslim faith. Ahl al-Sunnah wa 'l-Jam`ah advocate for an integrated understanding, while Ism`ls propose a dualistic interpretation that is not supported by the primary Islamic texts.
1. Claim: Ahl al-Sunnah wa 'l-Jam`ah believe inward and outward meanings are interrelated. Confirmation: Supported by the text.
2. Claim: Ism`ls interpret inward and outward meanings independently. Confirmation: Supported by the text.
3. Claim: The Qur'an and Sunnah do not support the Ism`li belief that the Imam conveyed a complementary knowledge. Confirmation: Supported by the text.
