Abstract

The current study identifies and highlights some of the cutting-edge new services offered by Pakistani libraries. To get the desired results, a qualitative methodology of research was adopted and data were collected through interview technique. Furthermore, the websites and social media accounts of these public libraries have been reviewed. The study's sample included each of Lahore's public libraries. The outcomes indicated there are many innovations in the services of public libraries introduced during the last two decades. The purpose of this research was to present the innovations in public libraries that will be helpful for new library users and build a positive image of these libraries in society. Additionally, the results can draw the attention of decision-makers from other nearby developing nations to enhance services, image, and the professional development of their staff.


Research Objective

To identify and highlight cutting-edge new services offered by public libraries in Lahore, Pakistan, and to present these innovations to benefit new library users, build a positive image of these libraries, and draw attention from decision-makers in other developing nations.


Methodology

A qualitative research methodology was adopted. Data were collected through interviews with library staff and observation. Websites and social media accounts of public libraries in Lahore were also reviewed. A purposive sampling approach was used, focusing on major public libraries in Lahore.

Discussion

Public libraries are evolving beyond traditional book repositories to become vital community hubs offering a wide array of services. Despite financial constraints and the challenges posed by globalization and technological advancements, libraries in Pakistan are actively innovating. The study highlights that while these libraries are making significant contributions, there is a need to enhance their public image and secure government support for infrastructure development to meet future challenges.


Key Findings

Pakistani public libraries, particularly in Lahore, are introducing innovative services to meet diverse community needs. These services include information resources, reference and referral, research support, children's programs, training sessions, community engagement activities, learning centers, and specialized services for specific populations. Unique innovations observed include "Library on Wheel," "Human Library," "Lahore Historical Project," free computer and internet services, storytelling sessions, young scientist sessions, training sessions, and career counseling.


Conclusion

Public libraries in Lahore are demonstrating a commitment to innovation by offering unique services that cater to the evolving needs of their communities. These efforts, made with limited resources, showcase their potential to contribute significantly to societal development. However, increased public awareness, a positive image, and government investment are crucial for their sustained growth and relevance in the digital age.
