Abstract

Production of cotton is faced with a number of challenges and amongst these are a lot of pests including aphids, mealybugs, and bollworms.  Cotton bollworms namely heliothis, red, spiny, and pink can cause a yield reduction of 67 percent if they are not properly controlled. A study to evaluate the efficacy of Vantex 60 CS,  Dynamo 1.15% WP and Blanket 150 SC, new insecticides  intended for use in cotton was carried out at CRI, Tokwane and Matikwa in 2020 – 21 and 2021-22 seasons. Vantex 60 CS levels were 50ml, 100ml and 150ml. Dynamo 1.15%  was tested at 1250g, 2500g and 3000g. Blanket 150 SC levels were 125ml, 250ml and 300ml. Decis Forte rate was 50ml/ha. There was a no control treatment. Bollworm counts and predator counts were measured. Data analysis was done using Genstat 14 th  Edition. Data that did not follow the normal distribution was transformed using the square root transformation of (x + 3/8). Means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test in ascending order.Vantex at 150ml/ha, Blanket at both 250ml/ha and 300ml/ha were comparable to Decis Forte for Red, Heliothis and spiny bollworms as well as predator preservation. Dynamo was comparable to Decis Forte in preserving predators at all its levels as shown by Matikwa for both seasons but was outcompeted by Decis Forte in Heliothis bollworm control. Its 2500g and 3000g/ha were comparable to Decis Forte for RBWL and spiny bollworm control

Research Objective

To determine the efficacy of Vantex 60CS, Blanket 150SC, and Dynamo 1.15%WP insecticides on cotton bollworms and to observe their effect on predators of cotton bollworms.

Methodology

Field trials were conducted at Cotton Research Institute, Tokwane, Matikwa, and Dande over the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The experiment used a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 11 treatments, including a no-control treatment and Decis Forte as the standard. Treatments involved varying concentrations of Vantex 60 CS (50ml, 100ml, 150ml/ha), Dynamo 1.15% WP (1250g, 2500g, 3000g/ha), and Blanket 150 SC (125ml, 250ml, 300ml/ha). Bollworm eggs, larvae, and predators were counted during scouting. Data was analyzed using Genstat 14th Edition, with square root transformation applied to non-normally distributed data, and means separated using Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Discussion

The study evaluated new insecticides against established cotton pests, aiming to identify effective alternatives as some current pesticides lose efficacy. The results indicate that Vantex and Blanket show promise as effective alternatives, demonstrating comparable efficacy to the standard insecticide, Decis Forte, in controlling key bollworm species and maintaining predator populations. Dynamo also showed potential, particularly in predator preservation and control of specific bollworm types.

Key Findings

Vantex at 150ml/ha and Blanket at 250ml/ha and 300ml/ha were comparable to Decis Forte in controlling Red, Heliothis, and spiny bollworms, and in preserving predators. Dynamo was comparable to Decis Forte in predator preservation across all its tested levels, but was less effective than Decis Forte in Heliothis bollworm control. Dynamo at 2500g and 3000g/ha was comparable to Decis Forte for Red Bollworm (RBWL) and spiny bollworm control.

Conclusion

Vantex at 150ml/ha and Blanket at 250ml/ha and 300ml/ha are recommended for registration due to their comparable efficacy to Decis Forte in controlling Red, Heliothis, and spiny bollworms, as well as in preserving predators. Dynamo also showed positive results in predator preservation and specific bollworm control.

Fact Check

1. Yield Reduction: Cotton bollworms can cause a yield reduction of up to 67 percent if not properly controlled. (Confirmed in Abstract)
2. Experimental Seasons: The study was carried out in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. (Confirmed in Abstract)
3. Standard Treatment: Decis Forte was used as the standard treatment at a rate of 50ml/ha. (Confirmed in Material and Methods)
