Abstract

The present study aims to analyze students’ perception of the role of instrumental motivation in learning English as a second language at university level. The main purpose of the research study is to find the role of instrumental motivation in learning English as second language. It has addressed the students’ perception of the role of instrumental motivation in learning English as a second language at BUITEMS Quetta. The sampling technique employed for the present study, is simple random kind of sampling. Qualitative mode of inquiry has been used to address the research objective through unstructured, open ended interviews. The theoretical framework preferred by the researcher is specific to Dornyei & Otto (2005) Model of L2 motivation. The overall procedural details seek to address the main area of problem in a systematic manner. Thematic analysis has been used by the researcher for analyzing the content collected as a result of open ended informal interviews and the analytical tool employed for thematic analysis pertained to Braun and Clarke’s (2006) approach to thematic analysis. The overall data was thereon presented in a sequential order. The findings revealed that the students consider the role of instrumental motivation highly significant in regard to learning English as second language.
