The literature of psychology and philosophy had extensively dealt with the concept of identity. However, most of the existing theories did not consider gender as an important phenomenon in identity development. It has been noted that relatively little attention has been paid to female identity development and/or considered it as a separate phenomenon. A Jew authors have invited the attention of the researchers to this bias in behavioural research and presented new theories of female identity development. These theories are significant, but have some limitations too. This paper first discusses the theories of female identity and than presents an analysis of the existing literature and research conducted in this regard.
