The fiction contained in 36 textbooks, 16 Urdu and 20 English, prescribed by the four textbook boards of Pakistan for grades 6 to 10 were analyzed in terms of three major social motives: Achievement, Power and Affiliation. The total amount of fiction found in textbooks was low parÂÂticularly in English textbooks. The dominating imagery found in the Urdu textbooks was that of Affiliation followed by Power; in English textbooks it was Power followed by Affiliation. Achievement in both English and Urdu textbooks occupied the third place.
