Abstract

The Prophet presented the rules and regulations of war about 1450 years ago, in the time period when war is the sign of barbarism, bloodshed and brutality. Islam does not like war and bloodshed and not interested in taking prisoners. But if war becomes a compulsion it obliges to respond with full intensity and force. It never allows cowardice and lack of courage while dealing the enemies. Islam is the religion of Peace and harmony. It promotes the feeling of Peace, love, compassion and good will. And dislikes the harshness, ruthlessness and brutality. Islam’s pacifism cannot be attributed to its weakness. Islam on one hand encourages its followers to refrain from war and on the other hand, to be kind and merciful to the prisoners of war.
Islam treats prisoners of war as a worthy individual like the weak members of the human community, the poor and the orphans. He calls them fully deserving of mercy and human sympathy. And not only that, but in very clear words, he teaches them to be kind to them. This Article discuss the Practical teachings in relation to the prisoners of wars. It describes the rights of Prisoners and also derives the laws of dealing with prisoners from Quran and Sunnah. It also analyzes the practical working of ICRC, discussing its objectives and articles.
