Abstract

This study investigates the role of tourism sector in Nigeria with a view to assessing its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) and economic development of the country. The literature emphasizes the sector's potential for market expansion, emphasizing the importance of improving infrastructure and addressing policy inconsistencies to unleash its capacity to boost GDP. The study employs a descriptive and causal-comparative approach, where the descriptive approach summarizes the data on Nigeria’s tourism sector and the causal-comparative approach seeks to identify the influence of external factors on the performance of the sector. The research study indicates that the development of a vibrant tourism climate in the country has a future, but this would require addressing structural issues, appropriate legal framework formulation, and enabling the people to support the sector’s activities in Nigeria.
