Abstract

Cystic fibrosis is the most common cause of severe chronic lung disease in young adults. It is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting about 1 in 3200 whites, 1 in 25 is a carrier. In cystic fibrosis there is an alteration in the viscosity and tenacity of mucus production at epithelial surfaces. Death occurs from pulmonary complications (pneumonia, pneumothorax) or as a result of chronic respiratory failure and cor pulmonale.
