Objective: To demonstrate imaging findings of a variety of inflammatory breast disorders, using selected cases with mammography and ultrasound.
Methodology: The female patients visiting Federal Breast Cancer Screening Centre PIMS Islamabad presenting with symptoms of fever, pain, lump and redness of overlying skin are included. Patients age less than 40 years are assessed by Ultrasound only and patient aged more than 40 years are assessed by both ultrasound and mammography. Non-probability Purposive sampling technique was acquired to recruit study partners, during time period of 1st July 2022 to 30th September 2022.
Results: All patients of mastitis divided in three types. Out of 254, 218 patients were having infectious mastitis, 23 non-infectious mastitis and 13 patients were suspected of malignancy by ultrasound and mammographic findings. These 13 patients were biopsied and followed for Histopathological results, however none was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer.
Conclusion: Ultrasound examination in breast inflammation shows more specific signs in differentiating different types of mastitis and is useful in monitoring treatment, excluding complications and provide guidance for interventional procedures. Mammography performed as per departmental protocol show non- specific signs hence should be performed when complicated, malignant and uncommon forms of mastitis are suspected.
