Abstract

This literature review examines the multifaceted challenges and strategies related to health equity within public health initiatives. It highlights the critical importance of addressing structural barriers and historical injustices perpetuating health disparities among marginalized communities. Key strategies for improving health equity, such as community-led approaches, place-based initiatives, workforce development, data-driven management, and equitable financial systems, are analyzed through the lens of successful public health programs like the STRETCH Initiative and the CDC’s Global Health Equity Strategy. The review identifies significant research gaps, including the need for comprehensive analysis of disparities-focused research and a deeper understanding of the intersectionality of social determinants of health. Innovative methodologies, such as community-based participatory research (CBPR) and real-time data collection, are proposed to enhance future initiatives. The findings underscore the necessity for continued efforts to promote health equity through targeted interventions that engage communities, dismantle systemic barriers, and foster collaboration among stakeholders. Ultimately, this review advocates for a commitment to achieving health equity as essential not only for the well-being of marginalized populations but also for the overall health of society.
