Abstract

Symbolism has been extensively used under the progressive literary movement in Urdu literature. In this study, short stories of Asif Farrukhi have been critically evaluated from the perspective of symbolism. He applies and uses symbolism in his short stories according to the situation and demand of the plot and story. This use of symbolic technique makes his communication more effective and distinguishes his literary figures from his contemporary literary figures.
Dr. Asif Farrukhi, a prominent figure in Urdu literature, is celebrated for his multi-faceted contributions as a teacher, writer, editor, and translator. His short stories masterfully blend realism, abstraction, and symbolism, using metaphors that are relatable and thought-provoking. Stories like "Deemak" ("Termite") and "Yazid Ki Pyas" stand out for their allegorical depth, addressing social decay and existential questions.
Farrukhi’s storytelling seamlessly incorporates mythology, folklore, and contemporary societal issues, often reflecting the urban chaos of Karachi. His unique narrative style resonates with readers, offering both literary sophistication and accessibility. In politically turbulent times, he skillfully employed symbolism to articulate societal challenges.
Rejecting literary conformity, Farrukhi forged a distinct identity in modern Urdu fiction. His straightforward yet evocative language ensures even complex symbols are comprehensible. Scholars praise his broad vision and innovative approach, cementing his legacy as a pioneer of original and impactful storytelling in Urdu literature.
