Reading is key component to vocabulary development. Learning words through reading involves encountering unknown concepts, inferring their meaning from context, and adding them to one's vocabulary. Regular reading exposes people to new languages, promoting both intentional and accidental vocabulary growth. In most cases, incidental learning is more lasting because it takes place in pertinent and engaging environments. This study indicates that regular reading contributes significantly to the expansion of vocabulary among students, with the frequency of reading sessions playing a crucial role in the retention of new words. Both academic texts and fiction have been found to contribute to vocabulary development, although in different ways. Research also highlights those students who engage in extensive reading, especially when diversified across genres and types of texts, experience faster vocabulary growth than those who engage in limited reading. Extensive reading provides repeated exposure to new words, reinforcing retention and usage in different contexts. This research considers the experiences of students and overall effects of reading on vocabulary development of college students. Research shows the importance of reading as an additional, yet effective method for vocabulary development.
