Abstract

This review paper explores the challenges of the education system of Pakistan with specific reference to the development of competencies that are requisite for global competitiveness in the twenty-first century. Some of the challenges raised include: an outdated curriculum, lack of adequate training for teachers and systemized prejudices that expose the failure to prepare students for the complexities of today’s economy. Based on Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21), the study analyses reform areas that include the incorporation of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication (4Cs) into the education system. Suggestions are focused on the policy level, preparation of teachers, funding, and the implementation of modern tendencies for the education system of Pakistan.
