Abstract

ABSTRACT
The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship between altruistic behavior and empathic tendencies among adults. The sample size was 200 including equal number of both genders. The research design of the study was cross sectional questionnaire-based survey design. Purposive sampling was used for data collection. The scales used were Toronto Empathy Questionnaire-16 (TEQ; Spreng et al., 2009) and Adapted Self Report Altruism-14 by Peter Witt and Chris Boleman (2007). The study was conducted in one phase which included descriptive statistics for the variables, internal consistencies of the instruments, correlation analysis, and t-test were conducted, and hypotheses were also tested. Hypotheses of the current study suggests that there will be a significant positive relationship between altruism and empathy among adults, Female will be high in empathy among adults, Male will show high altruistic behavior than female. The results from the present study indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between altruism and empathy. Also, there are significant gender differences in empathy scores as female scored higher on empathy scale. and there are no significant gender differences in altruism scores.
