Objective: This study aimed to compare the frequency of wound infection between two surgical approaches, primary resection with anastomosis (RA) and Hartmann’s procedure (HP) in patients diagnosed with sigmoid volvulus.
Methodology: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Department of Surgery, HMC Hospital, Peshawar, from 15-Jan-2023 to 15-July-2023. A total of 166 patients were enrolled and equally divided into two groups: 83 underwent RA, and 83 underwent HP. Participants were selected based on strict inclusion criteria, including age (18–60 years) and both gender. Patients were monitored for 30 days to assess wound infection, defined by clinical signs such as redness, swelling, or purulent discharge confirmed by laboratory culture.
Results: The study found that wound infection rates were 20.5% in the RA group and 14.5% in the HP group. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.30). Both procedures demonstrated comparable outcomes in terms of postoperative infection rates.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that both RA and HP are viable surgical options for managing sigmoid volvulus, with no significant difference in wound infection rates. The choice of procedure should be guided by patient-specific factors, such as clinical severity and overall health status. Both approaches require diligent postoperative care to minimize complications.
