Abstract

This paper examines how Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) may influence the field of graphic design in regards to innovation, authorship, and vocation. To process 20 studies deemed relevant to the topic, this research will employ the Critical Interpretive Synthesis (CIS) approach to investigate AI's potential to redefine the design workflow, enhance creativity, and influence authorship discussions. The findings also demonstrate the potential of AI to automate various types of repetitive tasks, thereby helping designers to work on more inventive elements of design. Nevertheless, there are concerns to be raised about losing human intuition, the elimination of a variety of outputs, and also ethical issues around AI-produced content, especially discussions about intellectual property and authorship rights. Also, the growing presence of AI in design raises concerns about job loss and the role of designers being replaced, with new roles emerging for AI trainers and design technologists. The researchers advise that this research needs to be expanded through inquiry into the legal grey areas of AI-generated content and attempts to make AI-enabled tools more culturally inclusive and sensitive. Future studies should also explore human-AI co-creative models to streamline creativity in design contexts.
